‘A Time Of Stasis’ marks Andy’s first solo exhibition since 2020’s ‘Uncertain Spaces: Spirits of Place and Foreshadowing’ at the 20-21 Visual Arts Centre, and his first in Sheffield since ‘Uncertain Spaces: Kenopsia’ at Cupola Contemporary Art in 2019. This exhibition features many works being publicly displayed for the first time. While some pieces may be familiar, others will be new to many people. Andy’s art, known for its night-time cityscapes, austere buildings, and empty streets, has taken on new resonance since 2020, when such scenes became a common reality.

Living in Highfield, near the heart of Sheffield, Andy’s depictions are deeply personal, capturing spaces and scenes close to his home. The area between London Road and Bramall Lane, often seen as merely an area to pass through, is brought into view through Andy’s focus. His work over the past four years reflects the difficulties and frustrations of the times, serving as meditations, reflections, and projections on both personal and broader scales. The show’s title, ‘A Time Of Stasis’, also speaks to Andy’s personal challenges, as illness has significantly impacted his ability to produce and complete projects.

Andy’s work, often mistaken for photorealistic flatness when viewed on social media, reveals a painterly quality in person. This exhibition aims to close a chapter, perhaps echoing a collective desire to move forward. What the future holds, only time will tell.
