'Spirit Of Place' : 'Bramall Lane', 2024

The painting: a night-time urban scene with a strong, warm, yellowish-orange hue dominates the atmosphere. A red car is parked on the left side of the street, partially illuminated by a streetlamp. In the background, there is a large building with several lights on its side. To the right, there is a smaller, two-story building. The scene is enveloped in a misty, almost eerie ambiance, with the light from the streetlamp casting a soft glow over the surroundings.

The painting captures a quiet, almost desolate moment in an urban setting, evoking a sense of solitude and stillness. Since my show I've had conversations about the amber glow from Sheffield's Bramall Lane football stadium and the reasons for it. I thought it was to do with sodium floodlights keeping the grass growing as well as melting any ice. If you have an idea do give me a head's up as I'd love to know. With living just 1-2 streets away from the stadium I get to see when it's so bright, vibrant and at times saturated. The glow does seem dependent on the density of mist/fog and just how heavy the clouds above are. And snow seems to provide a variety of effects too.
