The painting: Looking directly down to the floor we can see a disposable face mask that has been cast aside. Laying on green grass the mask's shape, with its strings, is almost abstract in form.
Written as the painting was completed, 1st August, 2021: Thrown to the side of the road the mask has become a contemporary symbol whose meaning is strongly dependent on who is viewing it. Ubiquitous yet highly specific to our times. A battleground made of fabric signifying the extremes of the past 18 months.
