This painting depicts a night-time scene of a building with a sign reading "THE MARKET TAVERN." The building has a worn, aged appearance with graffiti covering the lower portion. The windows are dark, and a single streetlamp illuminates the façade, casting a warm glow. The street in front of the building is empty, and the overall atmosphere is one of quiet and abandonment. The detailed brushwork and use of light and shadow creates an evocative portrayal of urban decay.
I'm deliberately not saying anything about the demolition of this Victorian landmark earlier this year (2024) which apparently was in "error". I am, however, sharing this article that fills in what happened: https://www.victoriansociety.org.uk/regional-news/shocking-demolition-of-heritage-asset-in-error/
